Letson Hall Chorus
(Blind Choir)

Background:
Founded in Ottawa nearly fifty years ago, the Letson Hall Chorus is a group of enthusiastic
singers and musicians who are visually impaired. They display their musical talents in weekly performances at seniors’ residences across Ottawa each year from January to May. The choir’s name comes from the auditorium at the old CNIB building on Metcalfe St. Currently, we have nine blind singers, three volunteers, and our choir director.

Music:
Each year, we learn 15-20 songs during our fall practice sessions. The songs are geared for
a seniors audience -- to encourage them to sing and sometimes
dance along. Several members also perform solos (on accordion, guitar, piano, and vocal). With Canada’s 150th birthday coming soon, we have chosen songs this year to reflect that.

Appreciation:
Choir members feel good about sharing their talents. After the performances, audience members come up to greet the singers individually. Often, they mention how they have been inspired both by the talent and courage of the musicians. This means a lot to our choir.

New Members:
No special qualifications – just a love of music, and a willingness to learn the songs together.
